The job

I am the owner and head coach, and right now I am at the gym six days a week: noon to close on weekdays, and Saturday mornings. I need a second coach who can take the evening floor and Saturday mornings so I can run the business.

You will be the face of the evening floor. You run YouthBox, Boxing Fundamentals and the Boxing class every night you are here, Fit2Box on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and you hold the keys to the building. I will be on the floor with you plenty of nights, coaching alongside you, but the classes are yours to run. When I am on the road with the competition team, you are the gym.

This is built to be your only job if you want it to be. The base covers the scheduled hours. The personal training is where you build the rest, and I am handing you the pipeline to do it.

John Tomaso, Owner and Head Coach

About the gym

Tomaso's Boxing Club is an independent, owner-run boxing gym in Mt. Juliet. We run 100 plus members across adult classes, a youth program, personal training, and a competition team that travels to tournaments.

We keep classes capped, and whenever we can we run a class with two coaches on the floor: one runs the class, one stays with the new people. That is how we sell memberships and it is how we keep them.

What you will do

On the floor

  • Run YouthBox, Boxing Fundamentals and the Boxing class Tuesday through Friday. Boxing is our advanced class: live rounds, mitts, and competition-style work. You lead it. I will be in the room plenty of nights, coaching alongside you.
  • Mason is your second coach on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday and Friday it is you and me when I am there.
  • Run Fit2Box on Thursday and Friday. Mason runs it Monday through Wednesday.
  • Run Saturday mornings: the 9:00 Fit2Box class and open gym until noon.
  • Whenever there are two coaches on the floor, one runs the class and the other stays with the free trials and new people, walks them through it, and signs them up afterward.
  • Run every class on your own when I am away with the competition team. Sometimes that is Friday and Saturday, sometimes Thursday through Saturday, sometimes the whole week.
  • Corner fighters at local shows if you want to. Optional, not expected.

Personal training

  • Build your own client list. Book sessions any time there is no class or other PT session on the floor.
  • New PT inquiries come to you first.

Running the gym

  • Open at 3, close after the last class, and handle walk-ins, waivers, and membership questions at the desk.
  • Talk to the people who come in for class, especially new members in their first few weeks. The automated follow-ups are handled; the personal check-in is you.
  • When someone you know has not been in for a while, reach out.
  • Keep the retail shelf stocked. The inventory log tracks itself.
  • Clean before classes or after close, your choice, but one or the other every day: vacuum, spray the floors, wipe bags and mitts, bathrooms, trash. About 20 minutes.
  • Look over the equipment each week and tell me if anything is broken or worn out.

What I am looking for

  • A real boxing background. You have competed, amateur or pro, or you have coached competitive boxers. You can teach fundamentals correctly and you can hold pads well.
  • Comfortable with a first-timer who has never thrown a punch and a fighter prepping for a bout, sometimes in the same hour.
  • Able to turn a free trial into a member. Not a salesman, but someone a nervous beginner trusts after one class.
  • Good with kids. Our youth program is a big part of the gym.
  • Reliable. I am handing you the keys and the evening floor, and that only works on trust: you are there when you are scheduled, on time, every time.
  • USA Boxing coach certification. If you don't have it, that's fine. The gym will pay for it, and I'll pick the clinic and the timing. You do need to pass a background check.
  • Personal training certification is a plus, not a requirement.

Schedule

Tuesday to Thursday
3:00–8:30pm
Friday
3:00–7:30pm
Saturday

Sunday and Monday
Off

No split shifts. If a different weekday off works better for you, we can talk about it.

Pay and perks

  • $28/hour to start for your scheduled hours, about $36,400 a year at 25 hours a week.
  • A pay review at 90 days, based on sign-ups, retention, and how the floor is running.
  • Personal training is paid per session, separate from your hourly: $25 per 30-minute session, $45 per 60-minute session, about half of what the session bills, paid on delivery. Late cancels and no-shows inside 24 hours still count as delivered.
  • $25 for every new membership you sign.
  • Free membership, gym apparel, and gear at cost.
  • USA Boxing coach membership, SafeSport, and the coach certification clinic, paid for and renewed by the gym. I pick the clinic and the timing.
  • A real say in how the gym runs. I am not hiring a class instructor. I am hiring a second coach I can trust with the building.
With a solid PT book and steady sign-ups, this job pays in the mid $50s.

How to apply

Step 1
Email me

Send your resume and a short note about your boxing and coaching background to info@tomasosboxingclub.com with the subject line "Coach." Include where you trained and competed, who you have coached, and a phone number.

Step 2
Sit down at the gym

I will reach out to the people I want to meet and set up a short sit-down at the gym.

Step 3
Watch an evening

If that goes well, I will have you back for an evening to watch a couple of classes and see how the gym runs, so you know exactly what you are signing up for before either of us decides.
